Welcome to Mum, Babe & Meg’s blog. I’m so glad you’re here.
Welcome to the blog! This little space will slowly become filled with bite-sized pieces of education relating to all things pregnancy, birth, postpartum, babies, breastfeeding and infant feeding, plus reflections from me as a Private Midwife. Once a month I’ll jump on here and share information that I’ve recently learnt or information that I think every pregnant person should know as you journey through pregnancy, birth & postpartum.
But for now, I’ll start with an introduction of me.
Hi, I’m Meg. I’m a Private Midwife located in Central West NSW and I offer pregnancy, birth & postnatal care to women in Central West & Hilltops region of NSW - including Cowra, Young, Orange, Parkes, Forbes & Canowindra (any anywhere in between!). I grew up on a farm in Canowindra and one of my clearest university memories is dreaming of one day becoming “a Canowindra midwife” - where I would provide pregnancy care to my home town. I have worked towards becoming a Private Midwife for the first 5 years of my professional career and have now providing care as Mum, Babe & Meg for a whole year! Providing continuity of midwifery care to women from conception until 8 weeks post birth is a true joy & privilege. I also provide pregnancy-specific bodywork to address pain in pregnancy support phsyiological, uncoplicated birth, and am a current student Lactation Consultant.
BUT what does a Private Midwife even do?
There are currently (as of the time of writing) only 1502 Endorsed Private Midwives in the whole of Australia so I’ll forgive you if you have no idea what a private midwife is because chances are you’ve never heard of them or had access to one.
A private midwife is a registered health practitioner who has completed studies to be a midwife PLUS extra training (approx. 5 years full time of extra training) to have the ability to order and interpret blood and pathology tests, ultrasounds and prescribe medication for women and babies. Private Midwives are able to practice autonomously (all by themselves without the support of a doctor) to provide care to women and babies for pregnancy, birth and the 8 weeks that follows birth. AND our services are also eligible to Medicare rebates - meaning our services are considered a safe and appropriate option for women and their babies. Private Midwives are healthy pregnancy, birth and postnatal specialists, trained to support and assess women’s pregnancy, birth and postnatal experiences to ensure women and babies are happy and healthy.
BUT what about when pregnancy, birth & postpartum isn’t “healthy”??
Whilst I could type away for pages and pages about what we as people, women and practitioners can do to prevent, address and mitigate abnormal pregnancy, birth & postpartum experiences (there will be blog posts on this to come I promise!) - that doesn’t address this question that many women have when considering a private midwife. A private midwife’s training is anchored on the ability to determine “normal” from “abnormal” - and with the ability to order ultrasound, pathology tests and prescribe medication - private midwives can address when pregnancy, birth & postpartum doesn’t go to plan. Sometimes these investigations identify the abnormality that is occurring and together the private midwife suggests care to women to solve the challenge together. Other times, the private midwife consults specialists or refers women for additional investigation or care with a specialist service. The difference with a private midwife is - the private midwife is always there. Physically, emotionally and socially, when you receive care from a private midwife they remain by your side no matter what the pregnancy, birth or postpartum experience, either as the main care provider, or as part of a team of health providers all focusing on optimising the health of women and their baby/ies.
Research demonstrates over and over again - women who have care with a private midwife as their main health care provider are more likely to consider pregnancy and birth a positive experience, more likely to have an uncomplicated birth and breastfeed for longer.
I’d love to continue to chat about what I can offer YOU for your pregnancy, birth and postpartum. Bookings are now open so why not CHECK OUT THE SERVICES page or make a booking today.
